The new GE heat pump water heater is a hybrid combination of a heat pump and electric water heater tank. The electrical components in the tank only serve as a backup for times when high demand for hot water.
A heat pump is a highly efficient, environmentally friendly device that can be used in heating water. It heats the water by extracting heat from ambient air and transfer heat to water in a reservoir. It creates no heat, but simplymoves the heat from the water. A heat pump can also work effectively when the air temperature was only 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
It works like a refrigerator or air conditioner in reverse order. A fan draws air through the evaporator case of transfer of heat from the coolant. The warmed refrigerant is then pumped through a compressor. The compression of the refrigerant increases the heat, so that the refrigerant evaporates. The superheated steam thenpasses through the condenser coils that surround the copper inside of the tank. As the hot vapor circulates through the coil is transferred to heat water.
The GE Hybrid Water Heater is working with a 200% efficiency, making more than twice the standard tank water heater. In practice, cutting water heating costs by half.
